Story
In 1981, Dai and Jenny Evans set up Village Orchard in Havelock North, working the land for over 30 years. Built on farm-gate sales and a love of growing fruit, it was a thriving spot—until small-scale orcharding became unsustainable. In 2004, the orchard was uprooted.
With Bryn and Gareth off chasing rugby careers, Rhys pursued winemaking, learning the craft in France, South Africa, and Canada. But home was always on the horizon. In 2019, the Evans family returned to their roots, planting a new chapter just 200 metres from the old orchard. Village Vineyards was born.
The vineyard is a 2-hectare block of Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah, with 20- to 30-year-old vines growing in loam-clay over limestone. Certified organic since 2023, the land is farmed by hand, with no cultivation to protect soil biology. Biodynamic preps, winter grazing, and a hands-off approach in the winery let the fruit speak for itself.
Rhys, now winemaker and grape grower, reckons the best wines come from those who truly know their land. His time abroad shaped this philosophy, but Village Vineyards is his way of expressing a deep connection to rural Havelock North. Dai and Jenny, ‘retired’ in theory, are still out among the vines—Dai with his weed eater, Jenny thinning fruit and keeping everyone fed.
We keep it simple—grow organically, work with nature, and let the wine speak for where it’s from
